How to Get a Tracklist from a SoundCloud or YouTube Mix

5 min read

SoundCloud and YouTube host millions of DJ mixes, and the vast majority are published without a tracklist. Here's a step-by-step guide to getting a complete, timestamped tracklist from any mix on either platform.

The Problem with SoundCloud and YouTube Mixes

When a DJ uploads a mix to SoundCloud or YouTube, the audio is a continuous recording — there are no chapter markers, no embedded metadata per track, and no automatic recognition. The only tracklist information that exists is what the DJ chooses to type into the description, and most don't bother.

You can try asking in the comments, but most requests go unanswered. You can try Shazaming while the mix plays, but that only catches one track at a time and misses anything that happens during a transition. Neither approach scales.

Step-by-Step: Getting a Tracklist from a SoundCloud Mix

1. Copy the SoundCloud URL

Open the mix on SoundCloud and copy the URL from your browser's address bar. It will look like: https://soundcloud.com/djname/mix-title

Share links from the SoundCloud app (starting with on.soundcloud.com) also work.

2. Paste the URL into Scanamix

Create a free account at Scanamix, go to New Scan, and paste the URL into the input field.

3. Wait for the scan to complete

Scanamix downloads the audio, slices it into 10-second segments, and runs each segment through a music recognition database simultaneously. A one-hour mix typically takes two to four minutes to process.

4. Export your tracklist

Once the scan completes, you'll see a full tracklist with timestamps and confidence scores. Choose SoundCloud format from the export options to get text optimised for SoundCloud's character limits — then paste it directly into your track description.

Step-by-Step: Getting a Tracklist from a YouTube Mix

1. Copy the YouTube URL

Open the video on YouTube and copy the URL. Both long-form URLs (youtube.com/watch?v=...) and short URLs (youtu.be/...) are supported.

2. Paste the URL into Scanamix

Same as above — paste the URL into the New Scan input. YouTube URLs are processed using the same pipeline as SoundCloud.

3. Wait for the scan

Processing time depends on mix length. Most mixes under two hours are done within five minutes.

4. Export as YouTube chapters

Select YouTube format when exporting. The output is formatted as a clickable chapter list — copy it and paste it into the YouTube video description (if you're the uploader) or keep it as a reference for your own use. YouTube will automatically create clickable chapter markers in the player if the description starts with 0:00.

What to Do with Your Tracklist

Beyond just knowing what you heard, a complete tracklist is useful for several things:

  • Building a playlist — search each track on Spotify, Apple Music, or Beatport and add them to a collection
  • Buying tracks — if you DJ yourself, you can head straight to Beatport, Juno, or Bandcamp and purchase the ones you want
  • Adding chapters to your own mixes — if you're the one uploading, a timestamped description significantly improves engagement on both platforms
  • Sharing with friends — paste the plain text version anywhere

How Accurate Is It?

For commercially released tracks, accuracy is typically 70–90% of the mix identified. Each result comes with a confidence score, so you can filter to show only high-confidence matches if you want to avoid any uncertain identifications.

Tracks that won't be identified include genuine white labels, unreleased promos, and custom DJ edits. These simply aren't in any music recognition database. For everything else — released house, techno, drum & bass, trance, and most other electronic genres — the hit rate is high.
